When it comes to granite, people often think of it as indestructible, believing that no matter how it’s used, nothing can easily damage it. In reality, granite is not invincible and requires daily protection. Granite countertops are made from granite, which is a porous igneous rock primarily composed of quartz and feldspar.

Due to granite’s diamond-like hardness, its surface is somewhat scratch-resistant. However, prolonged use without proper care can lead to scratches and abrasions.

1. Seal the Granite Countertop

Granite countertops are made of porous material, which, if not properly maintained, can easily be scratched or damaged. Sealing agents can create a protective layer on the surface, safeguarding the granite countertop. This protective layer also makes the surface of the granite countertop smooth and shiny. Granite countertop manufacturers typically reseal the countertop before selling it, but over time, this protective layer can wear off. Therefore, it’s important to regularly reseal the countertop.

2. Avoid Dragging Kitchen Equipment on the Granite Countertop

Many kitchen appliances, such as food processors and stoves, are heavy and may have sharp edges on the bottom. These sharp edges can scratch or damage the granite countertop. To avoid this, do not drag heavy objects across the countertop. If the equipment is too heavy, ask for assistance or place foam pads underneath.
